Creative Kids – Getting your child to help decorate

The very idea of your child helping you to decorate may well fill you with dread – but before you write the idea off entirely, read this. You are probably imagining spilled paint and tantrums, but it doesn’t have to be that way, and there are a lot of benefits to getting your child involved with decorating…

Entertainment – How many times a day do kids proclaim that they are bored – yet when asked to go and tidy their room or help with chores, they make themselves scarce pretty quickly (obviously leaving the chores undone!) – Planning a bedroom makeover is a great way to alleviate your child’s boredom, and get them planning and thinking of how they want their room to look. This really encourages their creativity – get them to draw or colour what they want their room to look like and their ideal colour schemes. This is a great starting point and gets them doing something positive and creative.

Spending time in Their Room – Another thing that it will help with, is the child wanting to actually spend time in their room. Not that you want them to be an unsociable teenager, but going and spending time reading a book, or playing is good for their imagination and gives you the time and space that you sometimes need to get on with what you want to do. A child who has helped to design their own space will want to spend time in it as they have had an active input in its creation!

Tidiness – One of the best reasons to get your child involved in decorating, is it gives them a sense of pride in their own space. When they have had input into it and helped to decorate it, they get to see how much work goes into making it perfect and are much more likely to want to keep it that way. If you are thinking of setting up a separate playroom to contain all of the toys in one place and to give your child space to play, get them to help – it makes such a difference when they are enthusiastic about a room they will spend time in! Garden rooms are a good idea if you want to add space onto your home to alleviate some of the kid’s clutter – it is a separate room in the garden, where kids can have a bit of their own space and make a noise! Creativity – Getting kids thinking about what they want the world around them to look like is such a good way to encourage their creativity, and home is the best place for that to start! It gives them a sense of what they do and don’t like, and what sort of a personality they have – all of this leads to confident children who are more capable of making good decisions.
