Six pipe connection methods

Pipes are used everywhere and the way they are connected is very important because poor joints can cause leaks and damage. Different connection methods are used for different jobs and they depend on pressure, pipe size and cost.

Flange Connection

A flange connection joins two pipe ends with bolts and a sealing gasket and it is used in large industrial systems because it can handle high pressure. These joints are also easy to open for repairs but they can be expensive to install.

Threaded Connection

Threaded connections use screw threads to join pipes together and they are common in small plumbing systems and gas pipes. This method is quick and simple but the joints may weaken under strong pressure or vibration.

Butt Welding

Butt welding joins two pipes by heating and melting the ends together and this makes a very strong connection with little chance of leakage. It is used in oil and gas pipelines. The UK Health and Safety Executive says that badly maintained pipelines can create serious safety risks in industrial systems.

Grooved Connection

Socket Connection
